Jack Merritt earned a Bachelor of Business Administration, cum laude, with his concentration in accounting. Mr. Merritt earned a Master of Business Administration degree with a concentration in finance. Mr. Merritt graduated magna cum laude from law school and is licensed to practice in the States of Florida and Maryland, and several Federal Courts.
Mr. Merritt was a Systems Engineer and Sales Manager, and then Consultant with International Business Machines (“IBM”) for a period of twelve years. Mr. Merritt created a marketing program SHOW/400 that was implemented by IBM throughout the United States. Mr. Merritt has performed application programming and systems programming, as well as implementing communications networks and improving their performance. He earned numerous awards, including Systems Engineer of the Year and earned several recognition awards and events, including national Systems Engineering Symposiums and One Hundred Percent Clubs.
Mr. Merritt began his legal career with the law firm of Piper & Marbury, LLP (“Piper”) which at the time was the largest Maryland based law firm with over 300 attorneys. Piper & Marbury has since merged with several law firms, and is now known as, DLA Piper. While with Piper, he worked on several transactions, including the acquisition of Maryland Medical Laboratories by Corning, which was valued at approximately $400,000,000.00 USD, and initial public offerings of various companies. His legal work with Piper also included litigation of asbestos lawsuits, medical malpractice cases, and other cases for the firm’s corporate and institutional clients.
Mr. Merritt left Piper and accepted a position with a United States based insurance company. He actively managed the company’s national compliance affairs and litigation matters. Mr. Merritt led the company wide team that earned charter membership in a nationwide, industry ethical sales organization. He also managed audits of the insurer conducted by various States' Departments of Insurance.
Mr. Merritt moved to Florida to become General Counsel and Director of Worldwide Legal Affairs for an international consulting company and its international subsidiaries. He actively oversaw and managed corporate affairs, including contract negotiation, immigration, litigation and arbitration throughout North America and Europe, and in several Asian countries, including Hong Kong, China; Japan; Indonesia; and Malaysia.
Mr. Merritt is licensed to practice in the States of Florida and Maryland. He has been admitted to practice in several Federal Courts: (i) U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland - 1995; (ii) U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit - 1995; (iii) U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit - 2003; (iv) U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida - 2001; and (v) U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida - 2012.
Mr. Merritt is a past Chair of the General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Section of the Florida Bar. Mr. Merritt is a member of the American Bar Association. Appellate cases include: Hyundai Motor America, Inc. v. Hawley, Consolidated Case Numbers: Nos. 02-16312 & 02-17512, (U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, 2003); and Hawk v. Black, (Fla. 2nd DCA, 2008).
